Starting today, international students enrolled in master’s programs of less than two years duration are now eligible for an extended three-year post-graduation work permit (PGWP). This significant policy change comes from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), reflecting a recognition of the valuable contributions master’s students can make to Canada’s labor market.

Previously, the length of a PGWP was directly tied to the duration of the study program. However, with this new update, master’s students have the opportunity to receive a longer work permit, lasting up to three years.

Additionally, students enrolled in programs at designated learning institutions (DLIs) that are at least two years long are also eligible for the extended three-year PGWP.

In the coming weeks, IRCC will also update the regulations for spousal work permits for international students at the undergraduate level. This means that only spouses of master’s and doctoral-level students will be eligible for a spousal work permit. This update, however, will not affect spousal open work permits for spouses or conjugal partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

What are the eligibility criteria for the PGWP?

To qualify for a PGWP, international students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Completed studies in an academic, vocational, or professional training program of at least eight months duration at a designated learning institution (DLI).
  2. Completed a program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
  3. Maintained full-time student status in Canada during every academic session of the program.
  4. Received a transcript and an official letter from the DLI confirming program completion.
  5. Graduated from a public post-secondary institution or an authorized private institution.
  6. Ensure the educational institution is a designated learning institution (DLI).

It’s important to note that as of September 2024, students enrolled in programs that utilize a curriculum licensing framework will no longer be eligible for a PGWP.

This update presents a valuable opportunity for international students pursuing master’s degrees in Canada to gain valuable work experience and contribute to the Canadian labor market. For assistance navigating the immigration process and exploring your options, contact Altec Global Inc. today!
