In order to study in Canada, you will need to obtain a Canadian study permit. Although the study permit is not a visa, you will be issued a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) once your study permit is approved. It is best that you apply early and before you travel to Canada.

Study permit requirements:

• Confirmation or proof (e.g. standardized letter of acceptance) that you have been accepted to a Canadian school, college or university.
• Proof of your identity (valid passport, travel document, recent passport sized photos).
• Proof that you can support yourself financially during your time in Canada.
• No criminal record and willing to obtain a police check.
• Must be in good health and willing to undergo a medical examination if required.

A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, with an additional 90 days. The additional 90 days allows you to prepare to leave Canada or to apply to extend your stay.

Staying in Canada after Graduation

If you want to stay in Canada but you are no longer studying, there are a few options:

1. Work in Canada temporarily after you graduate by applying for a work permit.
2. Apply to stay in Canada as a visitor.
3. Apply to change your status and become a permanent resident.
