On the morning of January 31, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser attended a press conference to announce a series of measures to modernize Canada’s immigration system and improve the backlog of immigration cases. Fraser said the department would make decisions on 147,000 permanent resident applications in the first quarter of 2022, doubling the number from the same period in 2021. IRCC has also developed a portal that allows permanent residence applicants in Canada to complete the final application process online. In addition, IRCC will use government funding to expand the digitalization of the application process in an effort to speed up processing. At present, the immigration system has accumulated a backlog of more than 1.8 million applications of various types. Altec Global will pay close attention to the progress of this series of reform measures.

Altec Global’s CEO, Ms. Susan Gong, was interviewed by renowned news outlet Sing Tao Daily about the latest press conference of IRCC. She admired the improvement in process time. But she thought people still needed to pay attention to some problems with the application website. She talked about the reliability of the website and the backlog of applications.

Ms. Susan Gong revealed that she was one of the first to use the portal after IRCC opened it in September. At that time, she submitted the IMM0008 form for a number of clients applying for CEC immigration as required, but soon after, IRCC notified that the form could not be used to upload and must be filled out directly on the website. She believes this situation reflects the unreliable operation of the portal at the time, and she has since insisted on submitting paper applications to ensure that nothing goes wrong.

Ms. Susan Gong mentioned that after submitting the application on the website of IRCC, the temporary file number was not received. So the applicant could not check the application progress at any time according to the number, which urgently needs to be improved. In addition, Ms. Gong said that the application backlog of IRCC is very serious. Some applicants have waited for more than a year and a half and still have not received any notification. She believes that shortening the approval time and improving the approval efficiency will be the focus of the next work of IRCC.
