This significant policy change comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada<\/a> (IRCC), reflecting a recognition of the valuable contributions master\u2019s students can make to Canada\u2019s labor market.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Previously, the length of a PGWP was directly tied to the duration of the study program. However, with this new update, master\u2019s students have the opportunity to receive a longer work permit, lasting up to three years.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Additionally, students enrolled in programs at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/study-canada\/educational-institutions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designated learning institutions (DLIs)<\/a> that are at least two years long are also eligible for the extended three-year PGWP.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In the coming weeks, IRCC will also update the regulations for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/immigrate-canada\/family-sponsorship\/spouse-partner-children\/spouse-common-law-partner-canada-open-work-permit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> spousal work permits<\/a> for international students at the undergraduate level. This means that only spouses of master\u2019s and doctoral-level students will be eligible for a spousal work permit. This update, however, will not affect spousal open work permits for spouses or conjugal partners of Canadian citizens or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/new-immigrants\/pr-card\/understand-pr-status.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permanent residents<\/a>.<\/span>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">What are the eligibility criteria for the PGWP?<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">To qualify for a PGWP, international students must meet the following criteria:<\/span>\n<ol>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Completed studies in an academic, vocational, or professional training program of at least eight months duration at a designated learning institution (DLI).<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Completed a program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Maintained full-time student status in Canada during every academic session of the program.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Received a transcript and an official letter from the DLI confirming program completion.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Graduated from a public post-secondary institution or an authorized private institution.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Ensure the educational institution is a designated learning institution (DLI).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It&#8217;s important to note that as of September 2024, students enrolled in programs that utilize a curriculum licensing framework will no longer be eligible for a PGWP.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">This update presents a valuable opportunity for international students pursuing master\u2019s degrees in Canada to gain valuable work experience and contribute to the Canadian labor market.
