Here&#8217;s what you need to know about these important changes.<\/span>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6060 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cicvisa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/640-10-1000x667.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"788\" height=\"525\" title=\"\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>New Rules for Family Open Work Permits<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>For International Students<\/strong><\/span>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The spouse or partner of an international student will only qualify for an open work permit if the student is:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Enrolled in a <strong>master\u2019s program lasting 16 months or longer<\/strong>,<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Pursuing a <strong>PhD program<\/strong>, or<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Studying in an eligible and specialized program (detailed list to be announced).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Previously, the 16-month duration requirement did not apply to master\u2019s programs.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>For Foreign Workers<\/strong><\/span>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The spouse of a foreign worker will now only be eligible for an open work permit if the worker is:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Employed in a <strong>TEER 0 or 1 occupation<\/strong>, or<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Employed in a <strong>TEER 2 or 3 occupation<\/strong> that addresses labor shortages or aligns with government-prioritized sectors like natural sciences, healthcare, education, and more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The foreign worker\u2019s permit must also be valid for <strong>at least 16 months<\/strong> at the time of application.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Additionally, <strong>dependent children<\/strong> of foreign workers will no longer qualify for open work permits.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Exemptions<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Spouses of workers covered under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are not affected.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Spouses or partners applying for open work permits through family sponsorship for permanent residency (PR) will continue to qualify, provided they have a valid temporary resident status in Canada.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Impact on Existing Open Work Permits<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">For those who have already been approved for open work permits, these permits will remain valid until their expiration date.
