Insights from Susan Gong, CPA, CA, RCIC, Founder and CEO of Altec Global Inc.
In the world of Express Entry, a single technical oversight can lead to more than just a refusal—it can result in a five-year ban from Canada due to “misrepresentation.” To ensure your residency goals stay on track in 2026, we have compiled a comprehensive Q&A addressing the most common pitfalls found in the inventory.
Q1: My title is “Manager.” Is selecting that NOC code enough?
A: This is the most common trap. “IRCC prioritizes your actual job duties over your title.” Susan advise. If your contract says ‘Manager’ but your duties align with administrative support, your application will be refused for an incorrect NOC selection.
Q2: Can I stack hours from two part-time jobs to speed up my application?
A: There is a “ceiling” to work hours. IRCC caps recognized experience at 30 hours per week. You cannot work 60 hours a week to turn one year of experience into six months. Furthermore, overlapping hours from concurrent jobs are scrutinized; reporting them incorrectly can lead to an artificially inflated score and a refusal.
Q3: Can I wait until I receive an ITA to gather my documents?
A: This is extremely high-risk. Once you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you have only 60 days to submit. Critical documents like overseas police certificates or ECA reports often take longer than two months to obtain. We recommend being “submission-ready” before you even enter the pool.
Q4: What if my personal situation changes after I submit my Profile?
A: You must update your profile in real-time. Changes in marital status, the birth of a child, or even a language test expiring (valid for 2 years) must be reflected immediately. Discrepancies between your initial Profile and your final PR application can trigger a misrepresentation investigation.
Q5: I made a minor date error in my Profile. Can I just fix it in the PR application?
A: Inconsistency is a major red flag. IRCC’s systems perform automated data comparisons. Even an accidental error in travel dates or a small gap in your address history can lead to lengthy background checks or integrity concerns. Always keep screenshots of your initial submission to ensure 100% consistency.
Altec Tips
In 2026, with the normalization of category-based draws, IRCC’s scrutiny of the authenticity of application materials reached an unprecedented level of stringency. “Misrepresentation” is the highest red line in immigration applications; once crossed, it not only faces visa refusal but also a five-year ban from entering Canada. Immigration applications are not simply filling out forms, but a closed loop of evidence. Before clicking submit, please conduct a “three-step review”: review the work code, review work hours, and review consistency.
