At Canada’s heart is family reunification, and IRCC’s latest measure makes it even easier for families to be together!
Spouses, partners, and dependents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents, temporary workers, and students can now apply for Open Work Permits.
Previously, open work permits were only accessible through inland sponsorship or for those already in Canada on a Temporary Residence Visa (TRV). Now, applicants from outside Canada (outland sponsorship) are eligible for open work permits.
Eligibility for open work permits:• Family members with valid temporary resident status and the same residential address as their sponsor in Canada may qualify.
• Officers may grant open work permits under specific conditions.
IRCC aims to process spousal sponsorship applications within 12 months, ensuring faster family reunification.This measure, announced on May 26 by Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, demonstrates Canada’s commitment to reuniting families faster and supporting newcomers’ dreams while strengthening our country’s economy and social fabric.
