On May 23, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the Citizenship Act Amendment C-71, significantly changing how Canadian citizenship can be passed on to children born abroad. Here’s what you need to know:

Automatic Citizenship: Individuals who would have been citizens without the first-generation limit are now automatically granted citizenship.

New Lineage Framework: Allows Canadian parents born abroad to pass on citizenship to their children born abroad if they demonstrate substantial connections to Canada.

Substantial Connection Test: Parents must have 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada before their child’s birth or adoption to qualify.
