For those of us who live here, it’s easy to see why many people choose to immigrate to Canada. Just one short visit and many people feel pulled to live in Canada permanently. Let’s explore why people immigrate to Canada–but first, let’s look at why this is such a great thing for Canada as a nation.
Why is immigration important to Canada
The Canadian government has created a campaign to encourage immigration and to help Canadian citizens better understand why welcoming immigrants is important. The
Immigration Matters campaign explains that “Immigrants help grow Canada’s future,” and then details the contributions of immigrants in the areas of:
- Business
- Healthcare
- Sports
- Science and Technology
- Arts and Culture
- Food Service
- Philanthropy
And, as we discuss
on our website, “Canada today has a population of about 37 million people. Canada’s population expansion was fueled by immigration rather than fertility. Four out of every five of the 1.8 million people that joined the population were either temporary residents or permanent immigrants.”
Why do people want to immigrate to Canada
Historically, people have come to Canada for a variety of reasons. For example, the Chinese immigrated to Canada for work and to get away from challenging cultural conditions in China. As
CIC news tells us, “As perhaps Canada’s oldest non-European immigrant community, the Chinese have faced a bumpy road to full integration in Canadian culture. Today, they are the country’s largest non-Caucasian ethnic group, numbering over 1,300,000 residents.” The Gold Rush brought immigrants from the United States and elsewhere. Russian refugees come to Canada to escape religious persecution.
曼尼托巴省 has the largest concentration of Icelanders outside Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik. While people immigrate to Canada for a huge variety of reasons, a handful include:
- World-class education
- Good working conditions
- High-quality healthcare
- Freedom of religion
- Freedom of culture
- Few restrictions on where an immigrant can live or work
International students find great opportunities to study and live, regardless of their country of origin. Canadian society, on the whole, is accepting and supportive of diversity and pluralism. Additionally, Canada has a streamlined immigration process that, with a
